How to manage your budget and finance for your trip
Hanne has been to more than 50 countries, and we interviewed him about his adventures. She managed to do what most people dream of - find a way to travel while working in his career! Opportunities to live in many different places, usually for a much longer period that a typical traveler will remain in the same place, she was able to dive deep into many incredible destinations around the world.
What drove you to start traveling?
There are many factors that motivated me to trip in the big world. I always liked to travel and thought it was when I realized that I was really happy. In addition, I strong urge and wanted to see the world and learn about other cultures.
I also thought about my career, so I started to travel by doing internships, because I knew that it was a hard contest to find a job in my field in Norway. I really liked travelling this way, as it was a way to stay in a country longer and really get to know the people and their culture, and he finished with that I took many more internships.
After that, every time I came home from Norway, I got what they call reverse culture shock (a kind of depression to cause that you are not in your country of origin of the House) and I wanted to just go out to travel again. And that's how it has been ever since.
Where did you go and where are you going?
I have been to more than 50 countries on five continents. I guess it will be boring and too if I mention all here. However, I live for longer in New York, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Cuba, the Bolivia and the India.
That being said, I dream of going around that I was not yet, that's where I'm going. But my next trip back to Central America. I will be going to the Mexico, the Honduras and the Belize. This will very probably be in June.
How do you plan your route and how is spontaneous?
Most of my trips are quite spontaneous. I am a person who usually books my airline ticket a few weeks or days before. But have generally been thought travel to that country for a period of time. Moreover, I usually don't plan what to see. I'm coming to the country, and when I'm here I understand what I see, based on local boards and councils. I have never been disappointed when you follow the advice of its inhabitants, because they are the ones who know their country better. Moreover, I very rarely booking hotels ahead as well.
Once, before a trip to Iceland, I planned very well. There are no surprises on the journey, because I knew what was going to happen all the time. That's when I stopped planning and my travels have become more spontaneous, and is something that I appreciate it much more.
How did you decided what places to visit?
I like to travel to places where few tourists go. Where I can learn about interesting cultures and type intact. And I find these places by reading articles and speaking to the people I meet on my way.
When I'm in a country, I mainly relay on the local population. And based on their advice I decide which places to go. For several reasons, I don't like reading guides and therefore do not base my travels on it.
How do you travel around?
Get to a distant country, I usually use the flight. Then from one country to the other or from town to town, I got a bus or train if the distances are not far away. I took a lot more than 20 hours of bus rides. When I'm in the country I like to take local transport, regardless of who is. Tuk tuk, trufi or motorcycle.
what have you learned about yourself, or what do you think you will learn during your next trip?
All this trip alone made me very independent. I proved to myself that difficult any situation that I enter, I'm strong enough to fix it myself and survive. I have been without any money in Hong Kong, I lived in an area of conflict, armed with bombs and killings in Nigeria, a year and a half without water or electricity, in a horrific motorcycle accident, I had big problems with several times emigration agents, I was seriously ill, but I survived all this. In other words, I learned that I am much stronger than I thought.
what is the most surprising place, you have been so far and why?
Which must be Ganvié in Benin. Before coming to Benin, I had no idea that this floating village existed, so this was a pleasant surprise. It is the largest community of life on the water in the world and the city is built on stilts. It was so amazing to see that the people of the country has made all of their wooden canoes. Purchase, transportation and work. It has really opened my eyes as I had no idea that people can survive like that. But it is a testimony that we, humans can adapt to everything. Even living on the water.
How you managed your budget and finance for your trip?
I have some savings, as I worked in Norway. Fortunately, these funds went very far, as everywhere, is cheaper than the Norway. Then I usually travel sustainable and remain longer in each place, making it less expensive. I also often stayed with the local population, and then I don't have to pay for accommodation, food and transport often.
In addition, I also worked while I traveled. While I was doing my internship my housing, transport and food was covered. It's that I have used only 50 USD for 2 months in India. And which has been used on chocolate, water bottle and a saree.
I also worked 1, 5 years as Director of a foundation working with children of the streets, and it became income. I also gave English lessons to children, win a little.
what is the craziest story you have of your trip so far?
In Nigeria, due to that I lived in an area of armed conflict, it was illegal for transport to drive after dark. Round 7-8 pm at 07:00. This because the Government was afraid of suicide bombers. My friend and I went dancing at a club on Saturday night. In the night when we wanted to go home, he had no way to get home. So that night, we had to sleep in the bar.
You have any advice for other travelers?
Meet the locals. Try to avoid other travelers at any time and start conversations with local people. Learn from those who live in the country you are visiting. People to enrich your travels more than curiosities.
